Presentation of petition to Vince Catania on the steps of Parliament House

A petition containing 2,087 signatures against Straits Resources’ proposal was tabled in State Parliament by Vincent Catania on Wednesday 3 December 2008. These signatures were gathered prior to an unequivocal rejection of the project by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA Report 1295, dated 23 July 2008).

The petition is on the back of 4,504 letters of concern written to the EPA, the former Carpenter government and the Barnett government. These letters were submitted by Australians across the nation and by concerned people from as far away as the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Canada, Sweden, Norway, France, Spain, Israel and Italy.

Representatives of the Halt the Salt Alliance held a press conference on the steps of Parliament House an hour before the petition was tabled.

The petition was presented to Vincent Catania by Piers Verstegen
on behalf of the Alliance.
