EPA TO RELEASE ITS OPINION ON SALT PROJECT ON 21 JULY

Next Monday, July 21, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is expected to release its formal opinion on the proposed salt project by Straits Resources.

The formal opinion will be published in a Bulletin that will be available to the public via its web site.

The EPA Bulletin is extremely important because it will be our first indication of the advice that it will provide the State Government on the salt project.

Once the EPA Bulletin is released there will be a two-week period when appeals can be lodged.

The Appeals Convenor will then process the appeals and may seek further information before making a final recommendation to the Environment Minister.

If the EPA indicates support for the project going ahead, the Halt the Salt Alliance will mount a vigorous appeal on the community’s behalf.

If the EPA indicates it doesn’t support the project then we can expect Straits Resources to mount an appeal.

In either scenario we will need as many people as possible to voice their concerns about the salt project during the appeals process.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence of the environmental damage to the Exmouth Gulf’s pristine ecosystem if the project went ahead. We cannot let this happen.

Keep an eye out for a special edition of this eNewsletter which we will distribute following the release of the EPA Bulletin. It will provide a summary of the Bulletin and how you can voice your concerns to the EPA, Premier, Minister and other MPs during the appeals process.

As this will be a new representation, all previous submitters will be able to make new submissions.

We thank you for your support and very much hope you will make a submission during the appeals process. As ever your support is vital to help protect the Exmouth Gulf’s unique environment.

So mark July 21 in your diary and watch this space for further information.

What you can do to support the campaign

Growing numbers of people from Australia and overseas, determined to help protect this unique environment, are making their views known to the Western Australian Government.

Personalised letters, faxes or phone calls to politicians are also very important and the Alliance website has a full list of contact details.

Another good way of putting your views across is to write a Letter to the Editor and again the Alliance has details of how to make contact with the State’s major newspapers or you can spread the word via your own local community newspaper

You can find out more about the extensive support for the campaign by visiting the About Us and Links sections on the website.

Email your friends and associates asking them to participate.
